March 15, Longwood

The Longwood House is an 8-sided house. Plans for the house took years to complete and were quite involved, but the Civil War came along and the plans were abandoned. The basement was finished quite nicely (no photos allowed of the living area) and the family lived the rest of their lives in the unfinished house.

March 15, Rufus

Rufus died in his middle 30s and wanted to be buried sitting up in his rocking chair so when he died, they placed him in his chair next to the grave of his niece and built his grave marker around him.

March 15, Little Florence

Florence was 10 years old when she died. She had always been terrified of thunderstorms so when she died her mother had stairs and a window installed at the head of the grave and would go sit with Florence whenever there was a storm. The window has been cemented over.

March 15, Natchez Cemetery

If you read Greg Isles' book, TURNING ANGEL, here she is! She didn't turn for us though. :-) The five stones she watches over are the stones of the five girls who died in the drug company fire. All five worked at the company and the youngest was only 12.

March 14, Jefferson Street Methodist Church

We went to church here this morning and met so many friendly people. The church was built in 1807.

March 13, Grand Village

We visited Grand Village of the Natchez Indians in Natchez after lunch. It was free to go through the museum and out onto the grounds to see the mounds. I'll be back in a bit with some very interesting information about the mounds and the people who lived there. I included the photo of the trees because it has been a long, long time since I saw a tree this tall. :-)
