Sandhill Cranes and Snowy Trees

The Valley is now being visited by thousands of sandhill cranes and we found a few on the way home from the dunes.  The cranes visit for several weeks every year and fly over our house twice a day.  They are very cool birds and will be missed when they leave.

We also photographed some snowy trees on the way home.

I especially like this photo that Galen took.  The trees growing on the side of the mountain make a cool background for it.

Great Sand Dunes - Snow Covered

Roads around home were fine so we decided to drive out and get photos of the Great Sand Dunes covered with snow.  It turned into an adventure because the roads got more and more snow covered the closer we got to the dunes - snowy enough so snow plows were out clearing them.

Mountain tops

Took these three photos of mountain tops from Jen's place.

This photo was taken on the first seriously snowy day we've had since we got here.  The cabin is abandoned and the mountains behind it are invisible.

Chicken Coop

This is the before photo of the chicken coop that will be built in that empty corner all the way in the back on the right.  We park our truck in the front part of the barn because we can't squeeze past the truck and get out of the garage when the truck is parked in it.

More frosty photos

A frosty chain.

A frosty gate and fence.

Our frosted home.

A frosted tree.

The frost was so heavy and pretty today that we decided to walk/roll to the Pit Stop Store for coffee and a visit.  Locals get free coffee if we bring our own cups.
A frosted tree after the sun came out.  The frost started falling out of the trees when the sun warmed things up and it looked like we were in a snowstorm.  Beware of looking up at trees like this if you are downwind of them.  A slight gust of wind gave us all a face full of frost.

Frosty Colorado trees.

I went out early this morning, at -7 degrees, to take photos of the beautiful trees.  Here is a black and white version of one of the shots.

Loved the heart shaped tree in the background.

Beautiful trees and the Colorado blue sky.

Home Sweet Home where we are spending our first Colorado winter.  So far so good.  It rarely feels as cold as the thermometer says it is and it is incredibly beautiful.

Galen planted this little tree last fall.

Mountain View

I am a month behind with photos - again.  We have been in San Antonio for the past month where we have lots of friends and lots of things to do.  It is fun being in a city again for a while.  We leave for Alabama in about a month.

Anyway, here are some Mountain View photos mostly taken during Beanfest weekend, the last full weekend in October.

I haven't done a scrapbook page in a long time but photos people who stare at, photograph, and talk to Galen when he plays his washtub bass downtown called out for a scrapbook page.  This is a small sampling of his "fans".

The weather for Beanfest was quite nice - just the right temp for ice cream and this is the ice cream line.  The end of the line is the green roof on the left.

The outhouse races at Beanfest.

This is not a Beanfest photo but it was taken in Mountain View.  It is of Galen playing his new bohdran (Irish drum) at a Celtic jam.
